(Jeff Cavins welcomes you to a Journey through the Bible on You tube watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2FQy9h2QMI#t=11)

Have you ever thought about what it is about a good book or movie that is so captivating? Our first answer might be “a good plot” or “good characters.” I think there is something deeper going on though.

It has been said that we are captivated by stories because we, ourselves, are “hardwired” for stories. Why might this be? Because we are actually living a story – the story of salvation history – the story of God’s creation and interaction with the world. No human being is outside of God’s plan and desire. We are called to discover God’s story so we can actually discover our own story and calling – our purpose in this life and the next. The purpose and plan for our lives can be found in God’s revelation – the teachings of the Church and his holy word, the Bible.

I think it’s accurate to say that even Catholics who understand the basic teachings of the Faith may feel a little mystified by the Bible. Many of us have heard the various stories of the Bible – stories about Abraham, Moses, David, and the life of Christ – but don’t understand the collective whole – the overall story of salvation history. We don’t know how the readings are connected, who follows whom, what follows what, and how they ultimately are tied together and point to Jesus Christ.

Our parish is sponsoring an initiative of learning salvation history in Scripture through A Journey through the Bible. A Journey through the Bible is a Bible study that will dramatically improve your understanding of the Bible in just weeks. Taught via video by Catholic Theologian and author, Jeff Cavins, this Bible study will take your understanding of the Scriptures and Catholic faith to a whole new level.
